(By Cao Yujie)  The twelfth"21st Century Lenovo Cup" National English Speaking 
Competition was held on the afternoon of 19th October in the room 513 of the Student
Recreational Center.

  20 contestants from different colleges of our school had a fierce rivalry. The senior
undergraduate Qiao Jie from the management college, the winner of the competition will 
represent our university to go to the semifinal of the national competition.

  Every contestant delivered a prepared speech with the topic of "civilized behavior: 
learning to act with a proper sense of honor and shame" within 4 minutes. 

  Contestant No.6, Nie Min, expressed her opinions around the “honor and shame” of
the contemporary university students.She believes the foreign culture have some regard 
affects on our mortality. The public morals nowadays can`t match up to that in the 
past. Quoting the achievement of Liu Fangyan, she attacked the saying—university 
students are shameless. Other contestants were not to be outdone. 

  Contestant No.19 Qiao Jie, spoke glowingly of his views about establishing civilized
behavior by way of telling his own story. He narrated, an inscription"I love you"in 
Chinese was so flashy on the wall of a castle in Britain, it is really ironic. At the
same time, he mentioned, the enforcement of the regulations about the abroad travel 
showed that the right sense of honor and shame still hadn’t went deep into people’s heart, it also showed the government attacheed much importance to it. Then he 
analyzed the cause of such phenomenon, proposing the right solution. The whole room 
broke into a sea of applause for his brilliant speech.    

  There came the 2nd round ,2 minutes’ impromptu speech., after the prepared speech.
Then was the most exhilarating moment, the question and answer round. Speakers all 
presented excellent answers. Contestant No.15, Chen Qian quoted copiously from many 
sources to support her opinions about the exposure of the privacy of the celebrities.
She mentioned that the majority of people concern much about the celebrities, like 
Xie Tingfeng and Zhang Bozhi, etc. There marriage is blissful, but unfortunate at the 
same time. Contestant No.17 Chen Xiaoyan elaborated  her views about the sense of 
honor and shame. She held that the most important thing is that we should feel 
honored by having a beautiful heart, possessing abundant knowledge.       

  The competition is also the opening ceremony of 7th Fei Hang Cup university science
and technology festival. The activities was inaugurated by Ou Yangkang, vice 
secretary of CPC HUST committee. Secretary or youth league, HUST committee, 
Wang Zhiyong highly appraised this activity, wishing a prosperous science and 
technology festival. 

  Director of Student Administration Office Zhu Xin, vice director of Teaching Affairs
Office Zhao Xin, vice secretary of Youth League Gan Shibin and some leaders of Foreign 
Language College attended this speaking competition.
