Hu Xiangjian: Never be good,if you can be excellent
--after the interview of a “Model Student”
Hu Xiangjian, a junior student in FLS and the vice President of the FLB, has recently been awarded “Model Student”. In the year 2003, he took part in the Team Culture Contest with his classmates, and they won the second prize. The next summer, he worked as the teaching assistant of professor Katharine Merry Ely in a English Summer Camp. Due to his excellent performance, he got the All A Teaching Assistant Certificate. This yeah, in the 21st Century National English Speaking Contest Finals of South China Region, he won a second prize. Besides, he has been given scholarships for doing well in both study and social work for several times. “Never be good---if you can be excellent.” This is a motto of him, and he did make it to be excellent.
Fantastic dreams
The first step to succeed is that one dares to dream fantastic dreams. Hu has a lot of dreams and always tries his utmost to fulfill them. On entering this university, he began to have a series of fantastic dreams. He dreamed that he would gain the reward of “All-round Student’ every year. He dreamed that his class would be one full of studying atmosphere. He dreamed that he would be a member of the students’ union. He dreamed that in the spare time he would focus himself on developing his interests, such as computer science. He dreamed that he would be a “Model Student” in time....
He told some of them to his friends, teachers and parents, but for most of the dreams, he buried them in his inmost heart and constantly got courage from reviving them.
In retrospect, he found that his dreams have come true one after another.
Keep the balance between the three---study, social work and private life.
In the past two and a half years, Hu has been done well in keeping balance between the three elements. As Hu said himself, being excellent, one can never miss any of the three. As a university student, one is not supposed to spend all the time on studying, however it is still the top priority. Developing all kinds of skills and making full preparation for the future life is the purpose of university education. Thus, during these years, one may choose to challenge himself with some social work and gain experience which will definitely be precious for future use. As for private life, one should take the time to discover more beauty in everyday life.
Hu did all those as he said. He took every opportunity to listen to the Humanize Lectures, took an active part in social work, and always kept himself on the top of a report list.
No pains, no gains
To be an all-rounder, Hu had to make more efforts than others. He studied very hard on his major, English, which requires much time and energy to understand the culture conflict and accumulate a large vocabulary. As the suggestion Hu gave us, “Soak yourselves in the sea of English as a sponge.” Meanwhile, he saved time to learn other things and do social work while others were loafing around.
Be grateful to his parents, teacher, and friends.
Hu owed much of his success to his parents, teachers, and friends and was deeply grateful to those who helped him. His obtained good care, strong support and great courage from his parents, while, the teachers gave him professional advice to help him not only in how to study but in how to be as well. What’s more, “a good friend is a treasure”, Hu learned this proverb from experience. He has been quite influenced by his friends. Some of them set an example for him; some gave him encouragement; some….
After tracing Hu’s growing up in the university, maybe we need to make it clear how we want to be and dream up new schemes to improve ourselves. However, what’s most important is to remember “no pains, no gain”. (记者团:齐达)
