On April 6th , 2006, Christchurch Mayoral Delegation came to visit HUST. They were warmly welcomed.

Christchurch is the third largest city in New Zealand, as well as a garden city with beautiful views.

Christchurch and Wuhan will build up a more intimate relationship for they are planning to co-operate with each other.

Around 4 o’clock this afternoon, the mayor, GarryMoore, gave a marvelous speech in the multi-media auditorium 503 of undergraduate’s activity center. The mayoral delegation and the leader from HUST attended this speech. It attracted lots of students from various departments of our university, especially those who are major in English.

At first, Mr. CarryMoore gave a brief introduction of the garden city—Christchurch. Then he expressed his wish and faith to have a good collaboration. And still, he shared us with his understanding with the world peace and the environmental protection. The speech was followed by a question and answer section. The students raised a few dissimilar questions, and the mayor gave satisfaction to all of the questioners.

Soon afterwards, the group of people rode to the Reception House for Foreign Guest in No.1 Building. There, a signing ceremony was held. Mr. Liuwei, vice president of HUST and Mr. Davidson, vice president from UC(University of Canterbury) signed a MOU between HUST between HUST and UC on Academic Cooperation and Exchange. It is believed that this cooperation is a bottom-top one to some extents. Since the two universities both have privilege in its engineering course, UC had already had some sorts of collaboration with the computer science department since 2004. Mr. Jinhai, dean of computer science and Ms. Xiexia had already visited the University of Canterbury.

After the ceremony, two reporters from Journalists Association have a short interview with Mr. Davidson. He told us that his school is willing to accept those outstanding students to study for PH.D, without paying for more fees than local students. To become such a qualified one, you should be excellent enough, and a recommendation from the professor of our school counts much. What we students can really benefits from this program? We can share a lot of information with each other. More important, Mr. Davidson prefers to talk to us in this direct way, rather than through internet or something. That is to say, maybe they will give more considerations on the program of exchange students. Last but not least, the creative and innovative thing is really significant.
